Our Approach to Care — We’re Here to Help You Heal

If you’ve been experiencing persistent joint pain and swelling, noticed a butterfly-shaped rash on your face, or are dealing with symptoms like chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, and unexplained inflammation, it’s time to consult with a rheumatology specialist. While you may not receive a final diagnosis immediately, starting the process is very important; after all, early diagnosis and treatment often lead to better health outcomes.

Understandably, first appointments can be stressful as you share a lot of information in a short amount of time with your rheumatologist. Knowing what to expect and being prepared can help you make the most of your visit. Our comprehensive approach ensures that you receive clear answers and compassionate care every step of the way!

🩺 Consultation & Evaluation

From check-in to your consultation, you can expect your first visit to last about an hour, so it’s a good idea to allow for more time than you would for a standard primary care appointment. Your rheumatology provider will begin the visit with a thorough physical examination, followed by an in-depth discussion of your health history and any symptoms you’re experiencing.

🔬 Testing & Diagnosis

At San Antonio Specialty Health & Sports Medicine, we focus on a thorough approach to your health. Your doctor may order lab tests, including urine, blood, or joint fluid tests, to assess factors, antibodies, and genetic markers related to your condition. These tests, along with imaging tests, help us understand your health better.

Keep in mind that diagnosing autoimmune disorders can take time, often requiring years for a definitive answer. In many cases, we may start symptomatic treatment even before a final diagnosis is made.

💊 Personalized Treatment Plans

We provide medication management, infusion therapy, lifestyle support, and referrals. We will create a treatment plan that meets your specific needs. This plan may include medications, physical therapy, and important lifestyle changes such as adjusting your diet, managing your weight, and receiving mental health support.

🤝 Ongoing Support

Most rheumatic conditions and autoimmune diseases are chronic, but you are not alone in this journey. We are committed to providing you with ongoing support and offering follow-up appointments as needed.
